Margaret Meads quote “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

ThinkLocal.ca puts Margaret Meads quote into action. We hope you will join in the process of making a difference in our world.

ThinkLocal.ca provides information and resources for individuals interested in living sustainable, environmentally friendly lifestyles. We offer information and resources relating
to food, fashion, home and garden, transportation, local jobs, greenhouse gases, carbon emissions and related topics.

Many political and news items made it even more obvious we need ways to connect on a local basis and to return to having more say in how our food is handled, right from the growers to the table. The BC government announced the Carbon Tax, the price of gasoline has gone through the roof and while this may have alerted us to a problem that pre-existed these changes, it has escalated the number of people now thinking about the environment and buying local.

Then the news of Maple Leaf products and the Listeria outbreak and suddenly people are really thinking about what they are eating. Prepared, processed foods bring certain risks not encountered when we decrease the processing and shorten the gap between the grower and the consumer. It raises the question about mass produced, manufacturing of food products. Had this occurred with a small company, the number of people effected by the incident.

Some people will see the Maple Leaf incident as an inconvenience and isolated incident. For others it will be the catalyst to changes in their food choices. While there is no guarantee that food borne illness won’t occur when we shop local, it does give the consumer the opportunity to talk to the producers, or other people involved in growing and handling their food. This seems, intuitively to be an advantage. It increases accountability and puts
relationship back into the food chain.

Most of the articles and information on this website is interactive. Blog style articles gives consumers an opportunity to express their opinions. It isn’t our intent to be extreme, or controversial, it is however our intent to stimulate thought, dialogue and critical thinking. In the process, we will write articles with questions — questions we think society needs to think about. Many of these issues do not have simple answers.

We believe change is a process. The problems we as a society face did not occur overnight and they cannot be rectified overnight. Some solutions only open other questions.

Take time to connect with local suppliers and growers listed in our Resource Directory. The Resource Directory gives consumers the option of voting to rate local companies. This enables other consumers to find reputable local companies. It becomes a grassroots way of supporting our local economies and builds community.
