As the federal election looms, the carbon tax is front and centre of many debates. Will the carbon tax significantly stifle our economy or make any significant difference in our carbon emmisions? Humans are quick to adapt to the pain of new taxes. When the carbon tax was announced earlier this year in BC, gas prices were also escalating through the roof and everyone was feeling the pain at the pump.
Carbon Offsets purchased by consumers, or businesses, are invested in projects, on a global scale. While the projects may not be local, global warming is a worldwide problem and programs to reduce carbon emissions elsewhere have a positive effect locally. The goal is for carbon offset programs to counterbalance the damaging effects of pollution and in particular activities that increase greenhouse gases.
